Kaikondrahalli Lake Update – Events and Upkeep

Sewage Diversion work, funded by BBMP, is ongoing since the last few weeks at Kaikondrahalli lake. It may be few more days before the work is complete. Regrettably due to delay in this work, some sewage is trickling into the lake, despite blocking the inlets. We are seeing dead fish and some polluted water stagnating on the edges.  Hopefully these can be remedied once sewage diversion is over and the monsoons rains flush this sewage out. We are also talking to experts on bioremediation of sewage that might enter the lake in the future, but it will take some time and lot of work to get to implementable solutions.
Deweeding of both water weeds and land weeds is in progress and the activity will take another 10-15 days to complete. Deweeding is funded by United Way Bengaluru.

A fun event was organised for kids on 4th May at the lake. Priya Muthukumar of Storipur conducted a wonderful story session based on the book “Chuskit goes to school” involving sing-song rhymes, questions and answers. In the end all the kids built a bridge to make sure Chuskit- a child with disability- would go to school on her wheel chair. And along the way, all of us learnt to speak Ladakhi!
The session eneded with talk and a quiz on Indian birds, by a young bird watcher- Krishna. Krishna knew everything about these birds, from what their names mean to what they eat and where they are found. The kids from Thayi Mane very ably assisted him with the kannada names of all the birds.

Sobha SWD work

Storm water drain work on either side of inner road from ORR to HDFC bank in Green Gren Layout is progressing slowly but steadily, nearing completion.  Road relaying and finishing work is expected to start shortly. Some of the delays are caused by those who insist on parking cars in work sites and blocking work as well as traffic flow. Continuous on ground supervision and diligent followup with contractor and workers by a few SBTF (Sobha Bellandur Task Force) members is keeping the momentum going.

SWM volunteers from Corporates

Kasa Muktha Bellandur Team had done a presentation to Virtusa. Few of their  employees will now volunteer with the SWM team and will help implement segregation at source in buildings in their neighborhood.
You too can invite the Kasa Muktha Bellandur team to your office and they can help train sustainability champions there. Let them know SWM our way – simple and successful. And one can make new friends while making the neighbourhood a better and cleaner place!
Contact Harini Srinivasan <harinisri@gmail.com> and Malini Parmar maliniparmar@gmail.com with your office name and location.

Here’s how Iblur lake is making progress

It has been about three months since an update on the status of Iblur lake rejuvenation was shared. So here is one. As the picture suggests, there is water! That is a great news indeed. It is far from full, but to get to this point required a fair bit of work. Copious rains over the lake body were not enough. We had to find ways to clean up inlets of roadside drains that could feed the lake. We now have 4 such inlets and we will add a couple more once the current roadworks are complete. Here are some…
