Adoption, in India, is a lengthy, and obstacle-laden process. However, there are many people who take this route and have happy families.

  1. Respected Sir/Ma’am,

I am married since the last 6 years and still childless. Though nothing is wrong with me or my husband, I am unable to conceive. We are both working professionals and would like to adopt a girl child preferably who is newly born. I would like to share my love with a child as a mother. I also would like to know that if it is possible to know the child’s actual parentage or family background before adopting.

    Thanks & Regards
    Mrs. S Mukerjee.

  2. Hi Deepa,

Good to see this list of recognised placement agencies. Thanks for posting it.

But, the comment at the end about the length of the process and obstacles is not going to be helpful. There are countless couples taking easy shortcuts like picking up babies from hospitals and arranging private adoptions, just because of misconceptions and misunderstandings about the length of the wait or the obstacles.

The procedures as laid down by the Central Adoption Resource Authority are in the best interest of the child, as well as birth and adoptive parents. Waiting for a long time is a trade-off for safety and legality of the process, please don’t discourage people with such statements.

Personally we had a very short and fantastic experience during our adoption process. And many of our members also, of SuDatta Adoptive Parents’ Association, Bangalore. I think positive statements about the legal adoption process would encourage couples to not go for illegal adoptions and live in fear and secrecy all their lives.

    Thanks and regards,
    Nayantara Mallya
