Visit to Rainbow Drive: RWH tour

About 50 residents and estate managers from apartments and layouts  around Sarjapura Road took a 1 hr walk inside Rainbow Drive on Saturday morning to see how ground water recharge had been implemented there. This event was organized by BIOME Trust, MAPSAS and Rainbow Drive. The participants saw the recharge wells and interatced with Bharti and Manjunath of Rainbow Drive. They also watched a movie on how water enters borewell in small streams flowing underground. This was followed by a presentation by BIOME to launch the Aquifer Mapping Project.

Participants gathered around the 6ft diameter and 40ft deep recharge well

Rainbow Drive as a community has implemented 300+ Recharge Wells of more than 4000 litres capacity each which can recharge upwards of 1.2 million litres of water during every rainfall event. This project has made gradual progress since 2008 till date. The results have started to materialize now when a 250ft borewell is able to discharge about 150,000 litres of water daily (for most part of the year). This, coupled with other measures like an increasing block tariff for water, metering and regular awareness sessions around water have enabled Rainbow Drive to be autonomous for fulfilling their water needs.

Garbage burning rampant on Sarjapur Road

Rampant burning of garbage was reported to the BBMP Commissioner, the Joint Commissioner, the Environmental engineer and the Health inspector of this ward through email with pictures, causes and workable solutions. Kasa Muktha Bellandur team also spoke with the environmental engineer to come up with a more sustainable plan rather than just putting out fires (literally) every time it’s reported. However, it looks like action will be taken only after elections. According to Commissioner’s response by email, general public can use the following methods to report burning garbage or black spots:
1. BBMP’s Facebook Page
2. BBMP help line 080-22660000. A docket # will be generated for tracking.
3. Call Ward 150 Health Inspectors Bharagav – 9480684238, Shobha:9739470310
4. Call Ward 150 Environmental Engineer Mamtha – 9632709988

It is far from full, but to get to this point required a fair bit of work. Copious rains over the lake body were not enough. We had to find ways to clean up inlets of roadside drains that could feed the lake. We now have 4 such inlets and we will add a couple more once the current roadworks are complete. Here are some…
