Protest against Bellandur – Agara SEZ

Peaceful protest

Date: 7th June 2015

Venue: Next to Agara lake and the temple

Time: 9:30am – 11:30am

Protest is organized by Koramangala and Bellandur residents.

Why we are opposed:

  • Blatant encroachment on ~100 acres of Bellandur wetlands. Threatening the survival of Bellandur Lake, the largest in Bangalore.
  • A serious threat to underground water levels and sources
  • Mega project requires water currently being supplied to 3 big wards. Supply zero sum game: Builders will get the water, what about residents?

National Green Tribunal has fined builders 139 Cr. in landmark judgement in May 2015, making scathing indictment of Ministry of Environment and State environmental bodies for allowing this project on wetlands. But the court did not scrap the project, instead a High level Committee appointed to decide the fate of this ill-conceived project.

Please attend the protest and let your elected represenattives know that you care. Please spread the word about the protest among your neighbours and peers. Know more about the history of the impending ecological disaster here. https://www.change.org/p/karnataka-govt-please-stop-agara-sez

Foam on fire

Varthur lake has been foaming, for many years now, with toxic foam which looks deceptively serene. In the recent past, copious amount of foam spilling on roads and flying on to the faces of commuters has drawn attention of National media towards lake pollution. Last week this foam was found on fire at Varthur. Few days back, the same occured at Bellandur lake at the Yamalur bridge. What or who is responsbile for this? Presumably our sewage and detergents! Have a look at the news report here (courtesy NDTV).

Here’s how Iblur lake is making progress

It has been about three months since an update on the status of Iblur lake rejuvenation was shared. So here is one. As the picture suggests, there is water! That is a great news indeed. It is far from full, but to get to this point required a fair bit of work. Copious rains over the lake body were not enough. We had to find ways to clean up inlets of roadside drains that could feed the lake. We now have 4 such inlets and we will add a couple more once the current roadworks are complete. Here are some…
