Past few weeks have seen a few incidents of mugging near Outer Ring Road/Sarjapur Road area.

In mid-May, a resident of Sun City apartments and employee at a tech firm located on ORR was stopped by two men, accusing him of causing an accident. The person threatened tried to reason with them, and later using some pretext, drove into his office nearby. He left his car there, and enlisted the help of his company HR department, who helped him get home.

Earlier, there was a more serious and similar incident: a resident was forced to stop his car by two men on a bike, off ORR, who accused him of running over a person. The two men apparently went on to threaten the resident and made him part with his gold chain and withdraw money from an ATM. The mail forwarded by the victim has been circulating in many mailing lists and has also been posted here by somebody: Beware of goons on scooter trying to stop you in broad daylight.

Having heard the FIR could not be filed, another resident, Saroja Srinidhi had emailed the note to City Police Commissioner, which elicited a response. The HSR Layout Police Inspector, L Y Rajesh wrote back and clarified that a complaint has indeed been filed at the HSR police station.

Yesterday, some of the residents, Ramesh Sivaram and Murali  along with the Ward 150 corporator, Babu Reddy, met Rajesh to discuss how to prevent such incidents. Rajesh adviced that citizens do not go to ATMs in such instances. It is better to make a hue and cry and draw the attention of the public especially since this happened in broad daylight. He has also promised to share details of the incidents with the public.

To add to this, many recent cases of theft (stealing of shoes seems a common occurrence) has worried many residents.

Keep these numbers handy: HSR Layout police station: 22943467/3474.
